The mouse that
changed the world

Forty years ago, US inventor Douglas Engelbart demoed his latest contraption – and changed the direction of technology. The 'mouse', as he apologetically called it, proved to be a breakthrough system in computer interaction that helped spark the computer revolution – within eight years, Microsoft and Apple were already using Engelbart's invention in their earliest systems.

Sony OLED
touch Walkman
The rumour mill is rife that Sony plans to launch a touch-screen Walkman as a rival to the iPod Touch in January. No official announcement from Sony yet but the unveiling is strongly tipped to take place at next month's annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. If the rumours are true, the device will have a super-advanced 3inch-OLED screen – the best images available and great battery life – plus Wi-Fi and internet browser, and come in 16GB and 32GB flavours.

Apple more closed than Microsoft

Who'd have thunk it? Apple, long considered the people-friendly (and very pretty) David to Microsoft's profit-guzzling Goliath has turned the tables on its nemesis – but not in a good way. In a recent survey by online tech mag The Register, 55 per cent of respondents said that Apple now appeared more 'closed' than Microsoft, referring to the company's attempts to control every aspect of its development, thus limiting compatibility with other products. Wing-clipping legislation curtailing Microsoft's monopolisation of the software industry was seen as the main factor in the Seattle company's increased openness, while the success of the iPod and iPhone were seen as the temptations leading Apple down the path to the corporate dark side.

Virgin's 50Mbps
broadband
Time to get some go-faster stripes for your 'putah. Virgin has announced its new super-ultra-mega fast 50Mbps broadband service, which it claims should be available to 40 per cent of its 12 million customers by the end of the year. The rest of Virgin's customers are expected to be able to receive the £51-a-month service by the end of summer 2009. It's a massive leap from Virgin's previous top speed of 20Mbps and catapults the company into the forefront of broadband provision – none of its rivals will be able to achieve similar speeds without significant investment.

Zero Gravity

It's fast, it's furious, it's unfeasible. Zero Gravity is a palm-sized remote controlled car that can climb walls and race on the ceiling. It works via a mini vacuum cleaner that allows it to cling to any flat surface and support its own weight even as it runs circles around your light fittings. Sure, you use it for races on the floor, but where's the fun in that?

Portable digital TV
The portable TV has been around for a while, and it's generally been rubbish. But this chic little gizmo hides a DVB-T receiver behind its 4.3in screen, offering digital Freeview in pristine quality, devoid of the fuzziness that affects most analogue portable TVs. With its supplied headphones you can enjoy Loose Women at work, X Factor in the park or sing along to CBeebies on the bus. The rechargeable battery offers 3.5 hours of TV viewing, or twice that if you use it to watch videos loaded on to its memory card. Who needs Friends? Oh hang on, you can get that, too.
